In recent years, we’ve seen that vaping is beginning to be viewed as a safer alternative to traditional smoking, even during pregnancy. But the reality is far uglier. Expectant mothers and their unborn babies are often exposed to significant health risks and don’t know it because of the dangers of vaping during pregnancy.

In this blog post, we talk about the concerning epidemic of vaping among pregnant women and why it is such a big deal.

So we’ll take a look at the potential health risks to pregnant women, the impact of vaping on fetal development, and real strategies you and your loved one can take to stop vaping during this important time.

Vaping during pregnancy

A growing trend in recent years, vaping has become a popular activity among expectant mothers, many of whom have started to turn to e-cigarettes. Several factors make this trend possible, such as the fact that vaping products are now common everywhere. Nowadays, it is quite easy to buy E-cigarettes in many retail stores and online platforms, which is why they become an appealing option for many.

On top of that, many of those pregnant women believe vaping is a safer option than traditional smoking, so they think it poses fewer risks.

However, one of the largest factors behind the increase in vaping during pregnancy is the aggressive marketing of vaping to young people. Often advertising that vaping is stylish and harmless, can be very convincing in young demographics. They also go bedazzled in sleek designs and appealing flavors, and therefore, e-cigarettes emerge to be a less harmful substitute.

But new research is starting to paint a different picture. Vaping while pregnant is starting to reveal that it isn’t good for the mom or fetus. However, vaping is considered a healthier alternative and these misconceptions may be bad for the mother and fetus. The potential risks surrounding these habits need to be more heavily outlined to expectant mothers and how they should avoid these habits in their daily lives.

Pregnant women’s health risks

If you happen to be pregnant, your lungs are a major target of negligence for over a thousand risks associated with vaping. Experts fear that vaping can harm pregnancy outcomes. Some of the chemicals found in e-cigarettes can disrupt normal pregnancy processes and are associated with preterm labor and low birth weight, according to research. These problems are not just problems for the mother but they have long-term consequences for the developing fetus.

Not only can vaping during pregnancy exacerbate existing respiratory conditions, it can even make it difficult for the mother to breathe comfortably. E-cigarettes make aerosols and these aerosols contain heavy metals, volatile organic compounds that irritate the lungs and can exacerbate things like asthma. This further stress on the respiring system has the potential to harm the health and wellness of the mother as this added stress can make the physical demands of pregnancy more difficult.

Another thing that is one of the most concerning for vaping during pregnancy is the introduction of any form of nicotine in the body. It's easy for nicotine, a highly addictive substance, to cross the placental barrier and get into the fetal bloodstream. Nicotine can have serious implications for fetal development because nicotine affects blood flow, which might deprive the fetus of the very oxygen and nutrients it needs to grow.

Restricted blood moves may prevent the growth and development of the fetus and in turn, can cause a variety of health problems both before and after birth.

Furthermore, the types of harmful substances found in e-cigarettes have the potential to create more issues for the mother; e.g. poor cardiovascular and high blood pressure risks. They make the pregnancy that much more complicated because when we have these conditions on top of it, we have to be extra attentive to the pregnancy and do more intensive medical monitoring and intervention. However, since these risks exist, it’s important for pregnant women to be aware of the possible hazards of vaping and to get help quitting if they are having difficulty.

A variety of potentially harmful substances, the main among which is nicotine, are exposed to the developing fetus by a pregnant woman who vapes. Specifically, it has been shown that nicotine does cross the placental barrier, gets to the fetus, and could change brain development. Such exposure can result in the child’s years of cognitive and behavioral problems and prevent this kid from reaching milestones related to development.

Not only does vaping during pregnancy directly affect brain development, but a pregnant woman also increases the risk of a preterm birth and a low birth weight child.

The newborns with these complications are at risk for respiratory problems, and developmental delays and are more likely to have infections.

E-cigarettes, often sold as harmless, have profound effects on fetal health, and, unfortunately, the chemicals and additives found in them frequently play a major role. As an example, breathing in the chemicals harmful to the fetus from the e-cigarette presumably impedes fetal lung development, and this often causes problems with the lungs for the full length of childhood.

Additionally, vaping, which is just existing or smoking them, can make the fetus's vital signs like heart rate and blood pressure regulation go uneven. They can contribute to a stressful environment for the developing fetus, which in turn to complications in pregnancy and at birth. An added risk is posed to these moms who vape, though, as this can also potentially reduce the oxygen supply to the fetus. But it is important to understand these potential dangers so that we can make decisions on whether to vape during pregnancy when the health of your mother and child is at risk.

Quitting vaping while pregnant

It is a vital step towards the safety and activation of mom and kid. The first essential is setting a firm quit date. But quitting, especially from a dependence that’s been cultivated throughout a lifetime, can be difficult and it’s imperative to seek professional advice and care from healthcare professionals who can provide the specific advice and support needed throughout the quitting process. On top of that, they can offer valuable resources, like counseling services or safe-to-use during pregnancy medication options.
